Nicknamed the Pink Duracell Bunny for her extraordinary speed and agility, Nicol began dominating the squash scene by winning the Asian championship as well as becoming the youngest player to become the world’s woman junior champion- when she was merely 15 years old. In the process of becoming the junior champion, she startled players who were ranked in the world’s top 20. She won the junior championship twice and became the only 2 players in the history of squash to have achieved the incredible feat.

Nicol set the world squash rankings ablaze at a staggering young age. By the time she reached the age of 16, the squash wonderment was already making the world’s top 10 list and soaring up. Nicol has an invincible track record in Asia after winning the Asian championship a whopping 5 times in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004 and 2006.

In December 2005, Nicol became the youngest world champion after beating Rachel Grinham in the final of the Women’s World Open in Hong Kong.

In January 2006, at only 23 years old, Nicol reached a new height when she took over the helm as the world’s number one woman squash player. Nicol is not only the first Malaysian to take over the crown but is also the first Asian woman to be ranked number one.

Squash queen Nicol has a respectable reputation as a player who does nothing short than deliver. Playing her game with intense focus and grit, the marvelment roped in 7 WISPA titles in the year 2005, 6 titles in the year 2006, and an astounding 8 titles in the year 2007. Nicol was also named the WISPA Young Player of the Year in 2005, followed by the WISPA Player of the Year in the years 2006 and 2007.
In July 2007, Nicol was conferred an honorary degree- the Master of Arts honoris causa from the University of Notthingham for her remarkable accomplishments both on and off court. And in December, Nicol was announced as the winner of the inaugural Asian Sportswoman of the Year Award, beating 100 athletes from 25 sporting bodies and national Olympic Councils from 15 countries.

Nicol David is well known for her modest ways and strong family values. The double world champion is currently based in Amsterdam, Netherlands. She is coached by Liz Irving- a former world number 2 and 1997 World Doubles Squash Champion.

Now, at the age of only 24, she has 27 WISPA World Tour titles under her belt.

You MUST be a Malaysian !!

You are 100% spot on. She's the best. The only true World Champion from Malaysia. Even though the other racket sports.....is more popular, but it still does not have a true world no.1. Same as all the other sports played in Malaysia.

Heather McKay would own Nicol David. Nicol David would sign up for lessons the day after their match.

Talk based on logic pls
McKay might be way too old to own her

+ Nicol had just got her 28th Wispa title here in South Korea

To genie: I'm not from Malaysia, I just got her info from websites
Besides, Im her No. 1 fan.

Damn you Neil! You beat me to it....

At this present stage, Nicol holds an incredible record. There is still at least one female player who can beat her though, Sarah Fitz-Gerald.
She occasionally (usually in January) trains with Nicol at Moorabbin squash centre in Melbourne. When they last played, I believe Sarah still beat her.
Quite an achievement considering how long Sarah has been off the tour.

Look, Nicol is a good player but to say the greatest WIPSA player ever then you have to accept the opinions and comparisons from other people.

Given that we know that she still gets beaten by Sarah Fitz-Gerald who has been retired from the tour for some time would cast some doubt on your claim. I might also remind you that as at April 06 Sarah has lost one match to a female opponent in 7 years (2001) and I'm sure she hasn't lost since.....

This is not even looking at a comparison with McKay, Martin, and Owens... who else have I missed??

What's the big deal about Mckay or Sarah ? Both are gone. Who's better ? You can only PRESUME that Mckay will beat Nicol or Sarah is overall better than Nicol. We'll NEVER know, will we ?

As for Sarah, yes, she was very good during her time but then again she's gone now.

Its Nicol's era now. In 10 years time or more, people will also debate whether so and so is better than Nicol. By then Nicol will be retired and the same answer will arise, We'll NEVER know.

Um, the title of the thread is "Greatest WISPA player ever - Nicol Ann David", not "Greatest WISPA player NOW- Nicol Ann David". If you want to say she is the greatest player ever then you have to compare her with past champions Rolling Eyes

And given the other posts that say Nicol still can't beat Sarah F long after her retirement then you have to conclude she is nowhere near as good as her (and probably a few of Sarahs contemporaries also).

according to http://squashsite.co.uk/players.htm AND http://www.squashplayer.co.uk/players.htm , Nicol David accumulated full WISPA June 08 ranking points is 2840.

according to WISPA http://www.wispa.net/view_rankings.asp , Nicol David accumulated full WISPA June 08 ranking points is 2940.

Well if you are going to put in Owens, Lelani Joyce is an omission.

I guess if you were to have a Jahangir/Jansher equivalent for the women, nobody would argue with McKay, Martin and Fitz. There is a gap between these three and the rest, just the same as there is a gap between the Khans and the rest of the men, IMO. Usual disclaimers about different eras, rules and equipment apply.

Only one mention of Susan Devoy so far? She was completely dominant in her era and Michelle Martin could do nothing until she retired. Sarah F might be better now than Susan at her peak, but Leilani and Carol were not in the same class. Best player of all time? My vote is 1. Heather McKay. 2. Sarah Fitz 3. Susan Devoy

Nothing can be proved as we all know they were all from different eras. However, the fact that Sarah can beat Nicol in practice/exhibitions (assuming Nicol is taking them seriously as matches to be won-anyone bothered to ask her?) is interesting.
My conclusion is that Fitz would still be Number 1 if Nicol was born earlier. Never saw Devoy or McKay but from what people have stated over the years McKay would have beaten all of them.

The fact that the retired Sarah Fitz-Gerald can still beat Nicol David puts an end to this argument for several reasons. Its done.

It's clear the Aussies are so jealous to the extent that they are making up facts, by asserting that Nicol couldn't even get a game off Sarah. That is clearly a lie. They only need to look at the exhibition match in Vancouver between the two.

The indisputable facts are :

Nicol was the first person to win the world junior twice. Nicol is the also youngest player to win the World Open title. This means no one has ever won that title at her age ... not Michelle Martin, not Sarah Fitzgerald, not anyone.

Also, you can't judge a player's career that has panned out against one who is just starting. At her age, Nicol has already out-achieved every female player there ever was.
