I agree, Aussie Rules rules. Couldn't get enough of it when I lived down there. I'll take it over American football anyday. Go Eagles and Dockers! _________________ "Drive for show, drop for dough." |

Aussie rules reminds me of 5 year olds playing football (and I mean REAL football, the World Game), people following the ball in packs, scrambling around. It is painful to watch.
And what is with the match officials prancing around |

Good call you are right there !
As for the game, it is a big call saying our game is painful to watch given soccer contains about 90% passing sideways, backwards, sideways, backwards and on a good day 10% of attacking shots which may still result in a nill all draw !!
Each game has its skill and soccer certainly does but equally so does Australian Rules.
To suggest there is little skill in a game that does plenty of this is unfair:

I wouldn't slag off any sport that involves athletic endeavour - hell, I've even come round to appreciating cricket. Some people enjoy soccer for the sublety and strategy of it, some people can't get into it 'cos it's too slow and scoring events/climactic points take sooo long to happen. Often the big hyped-up matches turn out to be dreary affairs scarcely justifying the huge amounts of pay the players get.
At least with Aussie rules there is plenty of excitement and the scoreboard keeps ticking over more regularly. I probably prefer it to Gaelic football although sometimes the contrast is the Aussie Rules seems to have no rules.. but that is probably my fault for not sussing them out.
Personally Gaelic hurling would be the team game I'd watch in preference to any other but Id still enjoy soccer & rugby and the other field sports. _________________ ---

Hey Viper
I didn't say there wasn't any skill involved, I just find when the game breaks down (e.g. the ball starts bouncing) it starts to look very scrappy, lots of players scrambling around after the ball and at that point, I lose interest. I think the problem is playing a sport with an oval ball that spends a lot of time bouncing around. The rugby codes get away with because the ball goes primarily from hand to hand.

I don't recall saying "soccer" (from now on referred to as football) was great, but I guess that was implied from my REAL football statement. So yes, you get the odd crap game of football. Mainly the ones that are over hyped (the recent FA Cup final is a prime example). But I think the majority are far more exciting than you make out.
It all comes down to which sport you grow up with ... oh an following a team really helps |

| Football (Soccer) should get rid of the off-sides rule to see if they can open the game up a little bit. The quality of the defence is so much higher than in previous genereations, so I think we have moved past the point where the offence needs to be limited by the rules. |

Oh dear!
This would simply lead to punting the ball up the pitch to the goal-hanging striker. This would not so much open up the game as destroy any need for skill in opening up the defence. Stick Peter Crouch or Michael Jordan up by the keeper and just get Beckham to provide the crosses from anywhere on the pitch.
The best thing football could change at the moment is with regard to respecting the referees. Introduce some rules such those in rugby (10 yard penalty) to keep him in charge and to relieve the constant pressure/abuse from the players and maybe all the diving/playacting could be reduced a bit. |

As a spectator I prefer American football, 300+ lb. steroid freaks bashing each others heads in. It's like modern day Gladiators, very entertaining. As a player I prefer Rugby can't say exactly why just that it is a lot of fun. _________________ IN SQUASH WE TRUST. |

| American Football would be a very interesting sport, but for the fact that in a four-hour game, the ball is in play for only 12-16 minutes. |

Aussie rules takes ridiculous skill and athleticism. You try kicking a football 50 feet on the dead run with a guy breathing down your neck and hitting your mate square in the chest like Peter Matera was famous for doing. _________________ "Drive for show, drop for dough." |

| Yeah, it does seem that way. I'm also led to believe that the surfing is better in Australia than it is here in Canada. Well, obviously... |

| Lads. Man for man, Hurling is probably the best sport you will ever see, The sheer speed, skill, athleticism is a joy to behold. Soccer is like golf, its a great game for women of both sexes. |
