I used to play squash years ago, but always used a cheap racquet - about £15! Was a student at the time. Now I have started playing more regularly and want a racquet which is still cheap but not without merit.

I have seen a Head Liquid Metal Elite at JJB sports online for £30:
http://www.jjbsports.com/squash/head-liquid-metal-elite-squash-racket/prod_128217.aspx

Also seen a Dunlop Black Max Titanium for £35 online.

Also a Prince TT Pro for £30 on JJB sports:
http://www.jjbsports.com/squash/prince-tt-stealth-squash-racket/prod_112584.aspx

I know I deserve to be flamed for posting something like this, but we all need to start somewhere. I know nothing about weight, flex, strings, grips etc All I know is I like to play squash, but don't have a clue what makes a decent racquet.

One local store has these for sale around £30: Dunlop EVO Titanium, Slazenger Xtreme Titanium, Dunlop Tempo Graphite.

Can someone recommend a low-budget racquet that has a certain amount of merit?

Thanks folks

All those racquets are functionally the same, but have different style grips. Just buy what feels good in your hand.

Well I went to sportsworld - and I bought this one:

Dunlop powermax graphite: http://www.acasports.co.uk/product_info.php?cpath=399_400&osCsid=470df9367c00fc8c3e5a20b7c0f8fddb&products_id=5483
only I got it for £25 Smile

I also go this one for my brother:
Dunlop Max Comp Ti for £17.99 http://www.holdall.co.uk/product.php?xProd=2890
He is just beginning to play squash.

Comments please? Are they 'ok' - bit of a difficult question.

I think your brother got the best deal!
Don't stress too much about the quality of your racquet and just get out and play, every squash player remembers when they started playing on a regular basis and won't judge you for using a cheap racquet. Over time your racquet needs will become obvious and you will feel better about spending more.

Thanks Pedro - although I thought I got the better deal!

Is graphite better than titanium alloy?

I've tried them both and they're both good racquets. Especially for that price.

if you want cheap why not just stick with your old racquet? Can't get cheaper than $0. Or get some used but recent racquets... I'll some you some for a good price..seriously.

I'd have to disagree about who got the best deal, The Max comp is a great solid beginners racquet, but IMHO it's far too heavy to play seriously, I have one that I started with and cannot use it now as it slows me down too much.

I'm a total Dunlop fanboy, I really should try a different make one of these days.

Actually I was just being cheeky, he stated that he got a racquet for his brother which sounds like he paid for it. A free racquet regardless of the model would be a good deal don't you think?

To be honest, I don't know anything about either of those racquets. Rolling Eyes
