My observation is that club players will peak , i.e play their best squash at age 42, while pros seem to peak at 31. What do you think? It will be interesting to see how Jansher does at age 38.. Though didnt a 40+ year old qualify for the british open last year?

r u serious??? u do no peter nicol fell from being no. 1 and even the top 5 as soon as he got over 30 and men peak at 27 too btw which is y gaultier has just gotten good. Thats a fact u can look it up. Your gonna be at ur physical peak then. unlucky if u hav passed it.

Squashclub, I presume have some solid data to back that claim up? You are being awfully specific with your numbers. I am sure that every single person on this forum would know many players that do not fit that discription.

Everybody's career is different, everybody's potential / work ethic / training schedule / dedication / motivation / opportunities.... I could list a page full of factors that have to be taken into consideration in order to hypothesize the peak age of squash players. And it would be an average only. Very few players would fit the profile exactly.

How did you get the number 42 for club squash players anyway? Your club maybe?

I think any pro player in their 30's would play their best squash for one match . The problem is when they have to play consecutive days in a tournament. That's when their delayed soreness ( DOMS ) is more severe than younger players.

42 for club players is a number that fits my experiences from having played and observed hundreds of players.

Saying "30's" is a ten year span. I totally agree that the older you get, the harder it is to recover and back up day after day with tough matches. But there are countless exceptions to that 'rule'. To claim that 31 is the age players peak professionally is a little audacious to say the least.

Apparantly you know the ages of hundreds of squash players at club level. You must do to get '42'. While we could argue until the cows come home about how you came to this number, I do agree that club level players would peak at an older age than professionals. It makes logical sense. I look at my club, and would not have the foggiest idea of a. - the average age of the member - or - b. How old the members were when they 'peaked' in their career.

Which actually brings another question to mind - To what criteria are you considering that a player has 'peaked'? We have older members who are moving up the club rankings because they still take lessons. Don't the younger ones have the same potantial to do that, hence, they have not yet 'peaked'?

players peak in every sport at 27, this is for men, physically. The only way a club player would peak older is if there game was not based on fitness but other components of squash. However if you use things like tactics and accuracy and are 27 then you are going to be better than someone at the same age who has the same racquet skills.

Bendi36 I don't have a degree in anything sporting, nor do I read journals, I don't need to I just look at the cold hard facts of real life, let's take a look at a few:

Pete Sampras won 14 Grand Slams, only 4 of those from the age of 27 onwards. Lleyton Hewit is not even 27 but well past his prime. McEnroe's greatest achievements occurred before his sebbatical from tennis in 1986, he was 27 in that year.

Lance Armstrong won 7 Tour de France, first one when he was 27, weeks from his 28th birthday, however his most dominating performances were his last 3 wins aged 31-33. Bjare Riis first won the Tour aged 32, Marco Pantani aged 28. Miguel Indurain's best season's were 1992 and 93, aged 28 and 29, he did however win his first Tour De France aged 27.

How many swimmers do you know that are still competing at 27, yes Grant Hackett is one but he is hardly in the best form of his life, that would have been 2 years ago aged 25, his mate Ian Thorpe retired at 24, I don't know of many athletes that retire before their peak.

Even in Squash, you could argue that Jansher peaked before 27 given that most his World and British open final appearances occured before 1996, the year of his 27th birthday.

I'll find more examples if you want, there's plenty out there.

I think saying "SHUT UP NOW" is competely against your argument of being able to back up specific claims. NZ has backed his claims up with undeniable evidence, and for you to say that every sportsman reaches his peak at 27 is a load of rubbish! Some sportsmen may well do, but look at the likes of Armstrong. Still destroying the opposyion well past his 30th Birthday. Do darts players and snooker players reach their peak at 27??

And for the record I do have a degree in Sports Science.

It's great to see and hear such enthusiasm for the game of squash.
99% of posters, in my opinion, seem to make really intelligent and constructive contributions.
