My first and probably nearly my last post on Squash... Hi.

Am I allowed to hit the ball with my hand if I've lost my raquet? I skimmed the rules without finding an answer.

Had an informal game last week. During one rally, I lost my raquet when I hit the ball. My opponent played his return and he sent the ball to the left of court as I was running right to retrieve my raquet from the floor. Realising there wasn't time to get my raquet and play the shot, I just went for the ball, returning it with my hand. My mate gave me the point as a one-off.

Cheers,
David

NO!!!

The racket must be in your hand when you hit the ball and contact must be with your racket.

Similarly, I was teaching last night and my student when a long way out of position, jokingly tossed his racket towards the bouncing ball and it returned the ball to the front wall!!. Great shot, but still outside the rules....

Other foul shots are 'scoops' (ball in constant contact with the racket) and also 'double-hits', normally when the player attempts a boast shot.

From the rules:

Appendix 1: G3

Quote:
If a player drops a racket without colliding with the opponent, the Referee shall allow the rally to continue under most circumstances. It is considered that the player is already at a significant disadvantage, as the player must pick up the racket to remain in the rally.

and from appendix 2, definitions

Quote:
CORRECTLY - The ball being hit by the racket, held in the hand, not more than once and without prolonged contact on the racket.
