|
|
All Blacks assistant coach Robbie Deans has just been named Australia's new Rugby Coach. Very interesting to say the least, with 5 others in contention (all Australians), and the Oz Rugby Board choose a Kiwi.
No offence to the Aussies, but I believe it would be a cold day in the proverbial before an Australian was picked for the AB's top job! It's just a matter of pride really, but good luck to Aussie and Robbie - they must have come up with the right monetary package! _________________ Dream as if you'll live forever, live as if you'll die tomorrow. |

Coaching doesn't have to be about loyalty. And if I was the manager of the team I would want the best coach no matter what nationality or race they are. _________________ If the doors of perception were cleansed, everything would appear to man as it is, infinite |

Yep, fair call Bendi, except you know as well as I do about the aussie/kiwi "rivalry". I heard Peter Fitzsimmons on the radio and he thinks the Aussie Rugby Board are bonkers picking Robbie Deans. Can't think how it would impact on the Crusaders either, be a very interesting Super 14 this year! _________________ Dream as if you'll live forever, live as if you'll die tomorrow. |

I knew their was an aussie-pommy rivalry. I didn't know about the Kiwi-Aussie one. I don't think union is that big in Australia compared to AFL, league and a few other sports. In fact I don't know any of my mates who play it (I'm in QLD). Maybe in the southern states it's bigger like aerial ping pong or something. _________________ If the doors of perception were cleansed, everything would appear to man as it is, infinite |

Bendi, I guess the fact that Australia won the second Rugby World Cup, in 1999, and last clinched the tri-nations title - contested annually with New Zealand and South Africa -- in 2000, doesn't count as "don't think union is that big in Australia"?? The 2003 Rugby World Cup was held in Australia, and the final was played in....Brisbane, Queensland.
I'm not familiar with "aerial ping pong" sorry - guess that's something unique for you and your mates to play in Queensland. _________________ Dream as if you'll live forever, live as if you'll die tomorrow. |

No aerial ping pong is what I call AFL. I knew we won one of the finals recently, I had no idea it was in brisbane. And I have no idea what the tri nations is? I'm sure union is big in other places in Australia... _________________ If the doors of perception were cleansed, everything would appear to man as it is, infinite |

Sorry Bendi, but Rugby Union is huge in Queensland - The Queensland Reds is one of the franchises in the Super 14 - a series played between teams from New Zealand (5 teams), Australia (4 teams) and South AFrica (5 teams).
The Tri-Nations is a series of 6 matches between NZ, Aussie and South Africa - each country plays each other twice and it is fiercely contested annually. The Bledisloe Cup is included in the Tri-Nations, which is contested only between the AB's and the Wallabys - currently the AB's hold this.
Sorry to shove statistics at you Bendi - but rugby is alive and well in Queensland, and I'm sure it will be even bigger once Robbie Deans gives the Australian Super 14 Franchises the shake up that he's promising! _________________ Dream as if you'll live forever, live as if you'll die tomorrow. |

I don't know why your argueing with me. You live in New Zealand... I have moved all over Queensland since I was 5... I did know we had a team but that's one team over the whole of QLD. Theirs several squash teams. is squash bigger than rugby? I don't know what super 14's is or who Robbie Dean is?? Who are the AB's?? _________________ If the doors of perception were cleansed, everything would appear to man as it is, infinite |

The lad protesteth too much, methinks. Come on Bendi, if you know so little about rugby, what are you doing in this thread, denying so much?
I imagine in rugby the mantra in NZ is "if it is not us to win it, anyone but the wallabies" and vice versa in Oz with the ABs (All Blacks). |

Bendi said
I'm certainly not arguing with you Bendi, and you're quite correct - I do live in NZ, but for your information there are almost 200 senior and junior clubs in Queensland where prospective players can register to play. They are divided into 12 regions which offer a range of services. I'm sorry but I don't know if squash is bigger than rugby in Australia, it certainly isn't in NZ - rugby is the national game, but they're both passions of mine, which is why I wrote the initial thread. Robbie Deans is the new Australian Rugby Coach (a Kiwi from Christchurch), and the AB's are a team who represent NZ called the All Blacks......easy!
Fionnmacual - you're spot on matey! We support two teams - the AB's, and anyone who plays against Australia I was in Wales for the All Blacks RWC quarter final against France (which we lost in shocking fashion!), and know for a fact that nearly every Australian over there was cheering for France, which is a fair call because they'd not long before our match lost their quarter final to England. It's a mutual respect, but oh so competitive! _________________ Dream as if you'll live forever, live as if you'll die tomorrow. |
