The best ever female squash player and awarded special achievement award at this years squash awards.
Is there any footage of her playing available ?
Why was she so ahead of her time at her peak I wonder ?
| Quote: | The 2007 World Squash Awards' Lifetime Achievement award was made to Heather McKay, AM, MBE, the distinguished Australian who won 16 consecutive British Open titles between 1962 and 1977. Considered by many to be the greatest female player in the history of the game, and possibly also Australia's greatest-ever sportswoman, Heather dominated the women's squash game in the 1960s and 1970s. She lost only two matches in her entire career (in 1960 and 1962), and was unbeaten in competitive squash matches from 1962 through to 1981, when she retired from active open squash.

Because she trained for Aust womans hockey team so she had the benefit of the government funding from that when few other sports, especially squash had no funding. She was just fitter, and very little women opponents around then _________________ If the doors of perception were cleansed, everything would appear to man as it is, infinite |

Heather did use squash as training for hockey. (That's field hockey for all those North Americans out there!) She is a remarkable athlete. I believe she represented Australia in hockey as well. Sure she was fitter, and sure back in those days there were a lot less players to compete against, but it makes her record no less mind-boggling.
Not to lose a match for as long as she did, regardless of the era, is inconceivable in itself, but to win every match 3-0 as well is just... well... someone throw me a thesaurus...
Heather was a fierce competitor. I have had the privelege of not only meeting her, but being on court with her. It was only a friendly hit but she was still very tough, pulled no punches, and had the aura that demanded the respect she deserves. |
