a gym opened in my home town recently. nothing too odd about that i hear you say. i went down too see the gym and what i found was a small poxy gym with a few weights and cardio machines. only a few showers and no sauna, jacuzzi or anything like that. then, a few weeks later everyone got flyers through their postbox with information on this gym. this gym promised massive weight loss and lean muscle gain within 3 weeks by using their "state of the art" equipment and their new radical approach to training. apparently building muscle eats the fat off your body and this is how the gym was being marketed. a "new" concept of mixing cardio with weights. newsflash.... the gym is booked out solid and every overweight/unfit man and woman in town wants to join this small poxy gym. women rave about this place, its unbelieveable!!!
my point is, we as squash players are playing one of the most intensly physical sports there is which gives stamina, strength and extreme fitness through playing reguarly. is the sport ever marketed???? no.. is the sport ever promoted as being the best sport to play for all round fitness???? no... squash was voted by forbes as the healthiest sport to play recently, was this publlisised? no...... did you ever get a flyer through your postbox advertising the benefits of squash? of course not.........
what do you think? women especially are scrambling over each other when a new fitness class or gym comes along promising this and that. imagine if squash was actually properly marketed and advertised as it should be, the best sport a man or woman can play...........

good contribution there viper...

well i think guys want to get muscley and bulk up so they head for a gym. You can always argue squash helps you lose weight and your muscles will show better but your not building muscle when you play squash and if your not a fixture player- well even if you are a fixture player squash is more expensive and less time orientated than a gym. and a gym you can go everyday for a monthly fee of say 150 dollars. squash is 25bucks for an hr.

25 dollars an hour is a rip-off... All the clubs in my town just charge an annual fee for unlimited playing. And squash you need to book courts and a partner so its not as convenient for most people as just going down to the gym for an hour or two.

i am a member in two clubs. one is 100 euro membership for the year and 5 euro for 45 mins after that. the other is 100 euro for the year and thats it! lights are free, sauna is free. great courts. strangly enough, all the good squash players play in the more expensive club... just goes to show that cost of playing does not always have a bearing on number and quality of squash members.

Paying $25 an hour definitely does not encourage kids to play... that's for sure. Or beginners. Or most adults. Its a stupid way to run a squash club... unless you're the owner.

$25 an hour is over the odds for sure.

I don't want to join the whole argument, just a quick comment...

Point 2.

" are court numbers growing, steady or in decline" ?

Stories here on these forums demonstrate clearly a number of recent closures of established squash centers, so clearly court numbers are in decline.

Would that be a fact ?

Nope - that would be an assumption based on not hearing about or knowing if any new squash courts have been opened. It may well be a fact, but knowing that some centres have closed is not enough evidence to be sure that it is one.

There is a bit of PR going on here on the part of Edin Uni - they had 8 glassbacks, so they knocked 4 of them to make room for a gym. Wow, they put colour paint on the other four and have passed it off as 4 new courts. Dunno if the other examples fall into the same trap of PR folk putting a spin on things, not everything google digs up can be relied on.
