I remember posting here a few weeks ago that I thought Shabana would slip to #3 while gaultier and ashour would battle it out in 2008.
Looks like Shabana crushed gaultier in the Qatar final. After a 7 month slump, Shabana really came out gunning these last two weeks. Anyone seen him play either final? Is his form as impressive as the scorelines?
Any bets for Hong Kong? |

There's so much parity in the men's game right now that its literally anyone's tournament from week to week. Ramy wins Superseries, Gaultier the BO, Matthew the UO, and now Shabana in Saudi and Qatar. I wouldn't be a bit surprised if someone else won HK though with Ramy out, Shabana is the clear favorite. _________________ "Drive for show, drop for dough." |

I have a sneaking suspicion that Shabana will go three for three, and put Ramy's ascent to the top spot off for some time. I just can't see Palmer beating him right now, and Darwish will be pretty bagged by the semi if he manages to get through Palmer in HK.
Anyone heard anything more about Ramy? Any risk that he won't be able to play in the World Open? I really hope he can play that one, because Shabana will be pretty much guaranteed the #1 ranking all of next year if he can win all four of the big fall tournaments, particularly if Ashour gets no points counting toward his ranking in the last three events (his loss to Darwish will be one of his tournaments that is dropped from his average). |

I haven't heard anything about his heel injury lately either. The most important thing for Ramy right now is to concentrate on getting healthy and forget about winning tournaments. He's so young that he will be dominating squash long after Shabana is gone. I wish they would give Jansher a wildcard into HK because he has a long history at that event. _________________ "Drive for show, drop for dough." |

| Jansher cannot get a wildcard into the Hong Kong open or any other tournament for the rest of this year. Since he got a wildcard into the London open, and you can only get 1 wildcard per year, he now has to wait until 2008 to be able to gain another wildcard entry. At least, that is what it says in the Tour Guide. |

If he's only allowed 1 wild card per year, how the heck is his comeback going to continue? He's made it pretty clear that he doesn't want to play qualifiers. Though I think if he's truly serious and loves the game as much as he claims, he will do so, much as Agassi did in 1998, even picking up his own balls in satellite events. _________________ "Drive for show, drop for dough." |

In Saudi, the event everyone was trying to peak for, the top 4 seeds were in the semis, the top 2 seeds in the final, with the #1 winning.
Of course ramy gets hurt which disrupts that for the rest of these big events, but again a week later the #1 wins.
And if Ramy would have been healthy, I don't think many people would have bet against him to make the semis vs Gaultier. And then another top 4 seeds semi.
You can say an event like the BO and USO (only because it was before Saudi) is more of an open field because (perhaps) the top players aren't even looking to win it. More looking to get some match time for the coming events. I'm sure every player in every event wants to win, but you must admit that the focus of the top players isn't as apparent in a smaller event.
When it comes to the really big ones, looks like the cream rises and the top seeds win.
Put Shabana, Ashour, Pamler, and Gaultier in a semi and I would bet on a Final that would include Shabana, Ashour, or Gaultier.
Thats my feeling, and if it's not way off base (it could be) then it doesn't seem like there is a lot of parity at the top.
Again is seems to be more apparent in the events that really count.
Honestly, all this speculation comes only from seeing Shabana not really playing that well for 7 months (not many big events in that time) and then coming out and pasting everyone in the event that really carries some clout in terms of cash and points.
Watch, I'll eat my words when Ong Beng Hee wins the world open this year.
Go Bengy boy! |
