All this talk about the need to attract young people to a sport that is ageing quickly, I don't seem to remember juniors being asked what they want from the game.
So for you juniors, what got you into the game, what keeps you playing and what can the game of squash do better to attract and retain more younger people ? _________________ ........ Squash is a drug - and remember there is always someone better than you........ |

I'm a pretty average player - played because my dad did, like a lot of juniors in our club. Unfortunately the committee is pretty apathetic. After we got our rainbow courts in 1997 - fist in the UK to have Lottery funded rainbow courts with all the coaching markings and stuff, we made a big push for development with a lot of coaching sessions being done for free. Now the only sessions with a well qualified coach (level 3) are £10 for 40 mins. That is cheap I think - the club subsidises £2, but that's only because people are stingy and cheap in Lincolnshire... I've been on the committee as junior member for quite a while and am trying to subtley encourage us to develop a bit, but it's hard! It's a shame because Boston SRC does have the potential to be a big and develping club I think. _________________ Adam Hildred

Interesting, why is the committee apathetic do you think ?
Are they worn out from trying in the past with no results ?
Does your club actively try to recruit in the local schools for instance ? _________________ ........ Squash is a drug - and remember there is always someone better than you........ |

Hi Adam, As a fellow younger member of my squash club, who is involved at local, provincial and national level squash I understand your frustration that things are not done. Just this evening I had an argument with a director of the club regarding the increase in court fees for junior players. I feel that the do not undstand the need to encourage junior players in the sport. Wider avalibility of coaching, more funding for participation in the sport, and support from the squash clubs to juniors by organising coaching, open days etc..
Keep pushing is the only way you or I will get anywhere.. |

Hi Ed.
Does your committee have a junior represented on it ? If not it should have.
If not agitate to have the younger voice heard where it matters, speak up, put suggestion in writing to the board and try to get the numbers to get one of your on that board. _________________ ........ Squash is a drug - and remember there is always someone better than you........ |

I'm a junior and the two things they should change is make rockhampton the cumpolsory tournament in Central Queensland and also allow drinking while at tournaments. _________________ If the doors of perception were cleansed, everything would appear to man as it is, infinite |
