| No, seriously. I would say I win as many as I loose in the 3rd division of the Northwest Counties Squash League (apparently the largest league in the world with around 2000 players). There are more players below me than there are above me so what ranking should I go for? |

It's true, in the UK and Europe we have different 'grades' - most often it's A to E, but the definition varies depending on the organisation and/or event.
So, as a quick guide, how about this:
Pro, 6.0 = top county, 5.5 = county, 5.0 = good team, 4.5 = average team, 4.0 = high club leagues, 3.5 = low club leagues, Beginner
On that basis you'd be a 4.5 to 5.0 (which stacks up with me winning the 4.0 event in LA because I'd be below you in the NW Counties!) |

This is still US & UK centric.
For Canada our ratings "language" would be: Open, A, B, C, D, Novice
6.0 Open
5.5 Open
5.0 A
4.0 B
3.5 C

Going by the results so far, 1 in 3 are top county players!!
Can somebody put up all the rankings/ratings sites for their areas? I'll start... www.squashrankings.co.uk for all Scottish leagues/tournaments/juniors/ladies.
If you recognize any names, please say how you'd get on against them. Basically I'm calling you out, I'd be interested if 8 people on here would match the top 60 in the Senior rankings in Scotland whom I would guage to be 5.0/county level. _________________ ---

Just to let people know, the official comprehensive definition of each level is at: http://www.us-squash.org/rbl.html

For sydney the rating system is The Squash Matrix
I am ranked about 200th spot and play high A grade (in a district comp). Based on what stevecubs put I said I was a 5.0, but perhaps I overestimated |

I had a look at that site. I used to play WOSS leagues a few years back. The names of guys I played against and former team mates are all out of order IMO. I would never have given the top 60 any trouble, but there were a couple of players around 130-150 that it was close against. There are also players at 300+ that beat me (hence why I think it is out of order!). |

Thanks, fionnmacual, this is actually quite good. And Steve was spot on: I am a 4.5 - 5.0 player. Too bad we can't give each other a game. |

Thanks GOB - I agree that there are about 5-10% of people wth anomalous rankings... but some of that is down to insufficient/anomalous scores. I am ranked 530 out of 1200 in squashrankings.co.uk with a rating of 769 (out of 1000) and I put myself down as a 4.0 these days.
You can argue with all these ranking systems.. but at least it motivates keeping a record of all match scores, which is the only real truth. |

We'll have to all meet up at the Tynemouth Open, stevecubs could ensure I get a drubbing while he wins the "C"
BTW, East of Scotland Squash have been looking at the ResultsZone that you guys have been using. t'internet took its time coming up north of the border for squash results. _________________ ---

RE: Software
ResultsZone get my vote for low cost, good value for product capabilities. Bonus marks for service, great attitude and just plain old good people to deal/do business with.
Lower cost alternative: squashleagues.com
Premium alternatives: gigasports.com tournamentsoftware.com
I'd be interested in other experiences, perspectives and advice you can offer on what software your club uses for:
- box leagues
- other in-house leagues
- club rankings
cheers everyone! _________________ "We can't solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them." Einstein |

We use Peoria for online court booking , & online box-leagues and ladder. Very responsive and goes the extra mile without costing an arm and a leg. The developer is on this forum as SquashClub so you can PM him. Another squash junkie who is web literate so you feel good about putting business his way. |

These are the Swiss Rankings:
http://www.squash.ch/bre/rangnew/default.asp
An excellent system as far as I can see - all registered players (registration required to play in league teams) count all league and competition matches towards ranking points. |

Geez, what a discussion
I see we have a bit different systems in different countries, though I'd dare to call myself semi-pro. is that 5+ in our poll?
Cheers
P.S. To Marro - rankings and leagues may not really be the benchmark. I do boycott most of the national ranking matches but on a league level I beat the folks being ranked ca. 20. _________________ >>drops hot<<

| I would say semi-pro should be a 5.5. To call yourself 6.0, you should have had a PSA ranking at some point. |

The good thing in the Swiss system, is that all league matches count towards ranking points, as do all competitions of any level held within Switzerland that are run by anyone associated by Swiss squash - which is the vast majority of squash here. If you were only playing league matches and were beating top guys, you would still be at the top of the rankings too. Unfortunately the Swiss French area of the country has separated itself from this system (internal politics no doubt?) so it is not quite as comprehensive as it could be, but I would be very surprised to find any squash player in the rest of the country whose ranking was not at least approximately correct.
This system is far further reaching than anything I've yet seen for the U.K. which is quite likely made easier by the small scale of the squash playing community here. But if every player who ever played in competition of any variety in the U.K. was included in a similar type of ranking system, I should think that would be a fantastic way of providing people with an incentive to try to improve their rankings by playing more squash. |
